PhoneSheriff Review 2026: Why It Shut Down | TheWiSpy

This PhoneSheriff review explains what the app was, why it shut down, and what parents can use today. If you searched for PhoneSheriff hoping to buy it, the short answer is that you can’t. Below we cover its history, its features, and safer alternatives.

Kids start using smart devices very young, and online risks such as cyberbullying, adult content, and predators keep growing. As a result, many parents look for parental control apps. PhoneSheriff was one of them, but its story is a useful warning.

Use these points to navigate the review:

    • What was PhoneSheriff?
    • Why did PhoneSheriff shut down?
    • Features it offered
    • Supported devices and pricing
    • Is PhoneSheriff available today?
    • Safer parental control alternatives

    PhoneSheriff Review: What Was PhoneSheriff?

PhoneSheriff was a parental control and phone monitoring app for Android, made by Retina-X Studios. Parents installed it on their child’s phone to track location, review calls and texts, filter websites, and limit screen time. The same company also sold apps called MobileSpy and TeenShield.

    Why Did PhoneSheriff Shut Down?

PhoneSheriff did not simply pause its service. Hackers accessed data collected by the PhoneSheriff and TeenShield apps, including login details, text messages, GPS locations, contacts, and photos. Moreover, the apps stopped being sold in April 2018.

The story did not end there. In October 2019, the FTC reached a settlement with Retina-X. The agreement banned it from selling monitoring products that require buyers to bypass device security, and it ordered the company to delete the data it had collected. For details, read the FTC’s consumer alert on the settlement. Retina-X later shut down, so claims that the app will return are outdated.

    PhoneSheriff Review: Features It Offered

For a parental control app, PhoneSheriff had a solid feature list. It included:

    • GPS tracking and geofencing alerts
    • Web filtering and browsing history monitoring
    • Text message, call history, and contact monitoring
    • App monitoring and app filtering
    • Screen time restrictions and remote phone lock
    • Contact blocking, profanity alerts, and intrusion alerts
    • A panic button for emergencies

However, features did not protect the data. The security failures meant that private information about children and families was exposed.

    Supported Devices and Pricing

PhoneSheriff supported only Android devices and did not work on iPhones, iPads, Windows, or BlackBerry. Historically it cost $49 for six months or $89 for one year, which was expensive compared with rivals. These prices are for reference only, because the app is no longer sold.

    Is PhoneSheriff Available Today?

No. If you find a website selling PhoneSheriff now, treat it as suspicious. It could be a scam or a lookalike site that steals payment details. Similarly, avoid downloading files from unofficial sources that claim to be the app, because they may contain malware.

    Safer Parental Control Alternatives

Instead of searching for a discontinued app, choose a current, transparent tool that your child knows about. Built-in options such as Google Family Link and Apple Screen Time cover screen limits, app approvals, and location sharing. In addition, our reviews of FamiSafe, Qustodio, and Norton Family compare other options. See also our guide to parental control apps.

Whatever you choose, tell your child about it. Monitoring another adult without consent is illegal in many places, and the Coalition Against Stalkerware offers help to anyone who suspects they are being monitored.

    PhoneSheriff Review Verdict

Overall, PhoneSheriff had useful parental controls, but it is gone, and its hacking incident shows why a monitoring app’s security matters as much as its features. Therefore, do not look for the old app. Pick a maintained alternative with a clear privacy policy, and talk openly with your child about online safety.

We hope this PhoneSheriff review saves you time and points you to a safer choice.
